What is GIS?

Geographic Information System (GIS) is a computer-based tool used to map and analyze data in ways that is not possible by simply reading a report or examining a spreadsheet. Nearly all-county government information has a geographic component to it. GIS consolidates and integrates all of this information so that it can be managed more effectively and efficiently.

To have efficient and cost-effective GIS data available for all County Departments and public entities by providing comprehensive GIS service to enable decision making, improve efficiency, and enhance services.

To provide the necessary tools to help users make informed decisions, reduce duplication of duties, and to increase productivity for anyone working with GIS services.

To provide a high level of innovation, reliability, and accuracy of all GIS information to meet the needs of St. Joseph County users.

  1. Broaden and increase County Staff's knowledge about available internal GIS products and services.
  2. Streamline the process of creating and maintaining GIS data assets and map products.
  3. Align the GIS Department's human resources with the workload demands.
  4. Expand the GIS Department's products and services.
