NO CHARGES TO BE FILED IN DEATH OF ANTHONY ECHOLS

The St. Joseph County Prosecutor’s Office has reviewed the County Metro Homicide Unit’s investigation into the circumstances surrounding the June 19, 2010, death of Anthony Echols. Based upon a review of the physical evidence and witness statements, the Prosecutor’s Office has determined that, while this was a homicide, it was justifiable as Lisa Beattie acted in self-defense when she shot and killed Anthony Echols. Therefore, no charges will be filed against Ms. Beattie or the witness who was also present in the home during the incident.

The Family Justice Center (FJC) of St. Joseph County is a federally funded partnership of over 20 co-located member agencies committed to helping victims of domestic violence. Among the services offered free of charge at the Family Justice Center are:

Assistance in filling out paperwork for an application for a protective order
Assistance in devising a safety plan
Individual case management/advocacy and referrals
ADT pendant alarms
911 cellular phones
Answering machines
