INFORMATION ON EARLY MORNING SHOOTINGS

South Bend, IN—The County Metro Homicide Unit releases the following information about two shootings that occurred in the early hours of December 21, 2007:

At 12:48am today, South Bend Police officers were dispatched to the 1800 block of St. Joseph Street in reference to a shooting.  Uniformed officers arrived and found Philip Geans, male white, 37, suffering from a single gunshot wound to the lower chest.  Mr. Geans was transported to an area hospital where he underwent surgery for his injuries; the injuries are not considered to be life-threatening at this time.

At 3:18am today, South Bend Police officers were dispatched to the Hope Rescue Mission, located in the 200 block of South Street, on a report of a man who entered the facility and claimed to have been shot.  Uniformed officers responded and found Clem Holingsworth, male black, 20, suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. Mr. Hollingsworth was transported to an area hospital where he is under treatment; his injuries are not considered to be life-threatening.

The County Metro Homicide Unit was first activated to investigate the shooting of Mr. Geans, due to the severity of his injuries.  CMHU later assumed jurisdiction for the investigation of the shooting of Mr. Hollingsworth when investigators learned that the shootings may be related, as the circumstances of the shootings and the weapons used in both cases appear to be similar.

The County Metro Homicide Unit continues to actively investigate the shootings of Phillip Geans and Clem Hollingsworth.  Anyone with information about the shooting of Mr. Geans or Mr. Hollingsworth is asked to contact CMHU at 235-5009 or Crime Stoppers at 288-STOP.
